Following a mandate from my authoritarian father, I graduated from college in 1984 with a degree in accounting and started working that same year for Ernst and Whinney, then one of the “Big 8” public accounting firms in New York City. I knew almost immediately that sitting in a small windowless room, manually tabulating figures and inventorying stock, was not for me. After less than two years, I decided to meet with a senior recruiter at an accounting search firm in New Jersey (where I was living) in hopes of finding an accounting job closer to home. But, after a relatively brief interview, she said to me, “Honey, you don’t belong in the accounting world, you should be a recruiter and come work for us.”
