After a mid-summer intermission, the steady parade of wirehouse brokers moving to Rockefeller Capital Management resumed on Friday with its hire of a $4-million team from UBS Wealth Management USA in New York City.
The team is led by Angela K. Mwanza and had managed $850 million in client assets, according to a person familiar with their practice. The group also includes advisors Jordan J. Powell and Kuo-Chin “Mimi” Shih as well as client associates Wenyi “Jason” Wang, Shem Filipek and Allissa Purkey, the source said.
The group, which joined Rockefeller’s headquarters office at Rockefeller Plaza, is calling their practice Oryx Legacy Partners in reference to the species of large antelope native to Africa. (Mwanza was born and raised in Zambia.) They had been known as Evergreen Wealth Management at UBS.
A Rockefeller spokesperson confirmed the hire but declined to comment on assets or revenue. A spokesperson for UBS said she could not immediately comment.
After a wave of hiring earlier this year, including several large teams from failed First Republic Bank, Rockefeller had not announced a new hire since the June 28 move of a Bank of America private banker in Houston. It is not unusual for Rockefeller to take a break during the summer hiring lull.
Rockefeller’s five-year old private wealth unit has added around 105 teams since the Standard Oil founder’s family office recapitalized in 2018 with venture capital backing.
Mwanza, who did not immediately return a request for comment sent through social media, started her career in 2001 at J.P. Morgan Securities but left after less than a year for discount broker Quick & Reilly, Inc. She joined Lehman Brothers in 2004 and spent four years there before joining UBS, according to her BrokerCheck profile.
Mwanza was ranked #38 on Forbes’ best-in-state women advisors list this year and #153 on its best-in-state wealth advisors list. She had made one of the lists almost every year since 2017, according to her former firm biography.
Powell started his career in 2010 at BNP Paribas and joined UBS in 2014, according to his BrokerCheck profile.
